GEO 102 Geology of Kentucky

Prerequisites: MAT 012

An introduction to the geology of Kentucky through hands-on field exploration. We will spend much of the course outdoors, visiting geologic locations in the state such as limestone caves, natural arches, coal seams, and fossil beds. Students will create a simple geologic map of the state based on their observations, and the course will introduce basic topics related to geologic mapping such as identifying rocks and structures in the field, reading topographic maps, interpreting/mapping geologic contacts, and creating stratigraphic columns/cross-sections. We will also discuss the ways in which Kentucky’s landforms have shaped its socioeconomic past, present, and future. This course will require moderate physical activity. Course fee: $100
Non-credit for students who completed the course as GEO 186: Landforms and Surface Processes.
