The sociology of development is concerned with the causes, processes, and consequences of social and economic change around the world, with a particular emphasis on dynamics between the Global North and South. This course investigates how the concept of "development" has been theorized over time, what its purposes and objectives have been, who has defined its terms, and what the implications have been for less powerful groups in these processes. The course’s historical focus begins with the colonial period and Industrial Revolution and continues through the climate crisis of today, and it includes emphasis on critiques, counter-movements, and alternatives that have arisen over time in response to Western notions of "development".
